A photographer of both the natural world and the niche that people has carved for themselves, my style is influenced by landscape and wildlife photography as well as documentary photojournalism. My inspiration comes from the play of light and weather on the world around me.
I look to the work of Ansel Adams, John Shaw, Arthur Morris, Jack Dykinga, Joel Sartore, and Henri Cartier-Bresson as others look to the ocean to be reminded that there is something larger than themselves, and to maintain a sense of wonder.
I believe that the greater the quality--the crispness, the sharpness of an image--the more emotion they convey, be they landscapes of mountain ranges or landscapes of the human face. It is only through clarity--the removal of obstacles between viewer and subject--that we can begin to understand one another, and our relationship with this world we share.
I graduated with a B.A. in history from Grinnell College in 2006, and I enrolled into the University of Missouri School of Journalism in August 2008 to earn a master's degree in photojournalism (expected 2010). I believe that finding and developing a narrative and incorporating that thread into my photographs will make them more meaningful for people, and bring them closer to the issues that I care about. The latest updates on my personal work can be found on my blog.
Portfolios of both my professional and personal work can be found in the photojournalism, nature, and architecture sections of this site. I am available for editorial, personal, and commercial photography, including freelance photojournalism, portraits, events, weddings, and marketing campaigns.
